Silverstein “Brookfield”

When Hopeless recording artists SILVERSTEIN announced the release of SHORT SONGS, the 22-track follow-up to their critically-acclaimed album RESCUE, they were still in the process of choosing which original songs they would include and which classic punk songs they would cover. With each song clocking in at 90 seconds or less, the appropriately-titled Short Songs is divided into two halves: 11 originals and 11 covers from such seminal bands as Dead Kennedys, Orchid, Gorilla Biscuits, The Promise Ring, NOFX, Green Day and more. “Just with every album we produce, we’re always thinking of the ’sides’ of a record,” explains drummer Paul Kohler. “In this example, Side A will be the originals, and Side B will be the covers.

@Ganglians “Jungle”

Sacramento’s Ganglians return after a relatively quiet two years since their dual album dropping in 2009. The aptly titled Still Living hits the streets August 23rd stateside via Lefse, and August 29th throughout Europe via Souterrain Transmissions. Ringing in at just under an hour, the double LP stays true to their psychedelic roots established on their self-title debut and immediate follow-up Monster Head Room, they step it up a notch both stylistically and sonically by enlisting the help of producer Robby Moncrieff.

Human Switchboard “(Say No To) Saturday’s Girl”

As part of the first generation of indie-rockers Human Switchboard were transplants from Ohio that found their way into the NYC club scene of the early 1980s. Inspired by the writing of the Velvet Underground Bob Pfeifer, Myrna Marcarian and Ron Metz along with an endless slew of bass players worked up a great batch of edgy post punk rockers with battling boy/girl vocals before imploding. This collection is a must for anyone interested in the history of indie rock.

Anti-Flag “Neo-Liberal Anthem”

The 13 tracks that comprise the bands 8th studio album are arguably their most aggressive to date. With influences ranging from hardcore to modern folk punk, The General Strike is reckless yet tight, experimental yet familiar, and as impassioned and enraged as the bands feels.

The General Strike was recorded and produced by Anti-Flag at their home studio and is poised to be the soundtrack for the masses of begrudged private citizens that are currently protesting corporate injustice and governmental power around the world.

Elliott Smith “Twilight”

From a Basement on the Hill is the sixth and final studio album by the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. Released posthumously on October 19, 2004, the album was incomplete at the time of Smith’s death. Smith’s family hired his former producer Rob Schnapf and ex-girlfriend Joanna Bolme to sort through and put the finishing touches on the batch of over 30 songs that were recorded for the album.
